Course Description

Starting in the third grade, students begin developing their research skills by learning to use dictionaries, almanacs, encyclopedias, and atlases.  Gradually, they become more comfortable with finding answers on their own.  The goal is to be quite comfortable using traditional print sources as well as subscription databases and the Internet.

At all grade levels, emphasis is placed on the accuracy and reliability of information sources.  Information literacy grows significantly during their years at Ridgewood Avenue School.

The Library Media Specialist also provides instruction and reinforcement for all grades in applied computer skills utilizing applications such as Microsoft Word and Powerpoint.

Appreciation for the printed word is emphasized at the Ridgewood Avenue School library.  Reading as a pleasurable pastime is encouraged.  During library class, stories, poems, and essays are read and discussed.  The value of other periodicals and newspapers is also emphasized.
