Course Description

 

 

Kindergarten begins the formal education of library/media instruction in the Glen Ridge Primary Schools.  Each child is introduced to the function of a library and the appreciation of books and literature as well as the spoken and written word.

 

Students are encouraged to learn the design of a library in order to fulfill their book searches.  They are engaged in learning how to care for books and how to follow the rules of the library. 

 

Additionally, each child is encouraged to express her/his love of books through song, dance, poetry, puppetry, and drama.  They learn about authors and illustrators and research these people on the Internet by accessing their web pages.

The mission of the Glen Ridge Public Schools Library/Media program is to insure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information.  Our program also encourages our students to develop a passion for reading and provides the skills necessary for lifelong learning in our digital society.


New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards

 

 

STANDARD 8.1   (COMPUTER AND INFORMATION LITERACY) ALL STUDENTS WILL USE COMPUTER APPLICATIONS TO GATHER AND ORGANIZE INFORMATION AND TO SOLVE PROBLEMS.

 

STANDARD 8.2   (TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION) ALL STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE NATURE AND IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, TECHNOLOGICAL DESIGN, AND THE DESIGNED WORLD AS THEY RELATE TO THE INDIVIDUAL, SOCIETY, AND THE ENVIRONMENT.

Curriculum Description

 

 

UNIT 1 – INTRODUCTION

 

CCCS:  3.4, 9.2

 

Objectives:

Upon completion of this unit, the students will demonstrate the ability to:

1.      Care for library books

2.      Understand borrowing/returning procedures

3.      Follow the rules of the library

 

Duration of Time:  One month

 

Activities:

 

-          Introduce Leo the Library mouse puppet.

-          Complete Leo’s book on caring for library books.

-          Make shelf markers for borrowing ease.

-          Practice borrowing procedures.

-          Borrow books.

 

 

UNIT 2 – PARTS OF A BOOK

 

CCCS:  3.1, 3.4

 

Objectives:

Upon completion of this unit, the students will demonstrate the ability to:

 

1.  Name the parts of a book:

a.       Cover

b.      Spine

c.       Endpapers

d.      Title Page

e.       Half-Title Page

f.        Elements of a Title Page

 

Duration of time:  One month

 

Activities:

 

-          Read to students

-          Play guessing games

-          Book talks

UNIT 3 - INTRODUCTION TO THE INTERNET

 

CCCS:  3.1, 3.3, 3.5, 8.1, 8.2

 

Objectives:

Upon completion of this unit, the students will demonstrate the ability to:

1.  Explore author/illustrator web pages.

2.  Share information gleaned from web pages if they are reading.

3.  Enjoy puzzles, games, etc. on author/illustrator web pages.

 

Duration of Time:  Two months

 

Activities:

 

-          Watch demonstration on TVator.

-          Explore author/illustrator web pages at pod.

-          Complete puzzles/games, etc. on web pages.

-          Share information with class.

-          Author/illustrator visits to the library.

 

 

UNIT 4 – PRESENTATION

 

CCCS:  3.1, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 9.2

 

Objectives:

Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

1.  Understand the rules of using puppets.

2.  Act out a story or poem.

3.  Retell a story using puppets.

 

Duration of Time:  Three months

 

Activities:

 

-          Practice using finger puppets.

-          Present skits using finger puppets.

-          Listen to stories told using puppets.

-          Repeat the story for the class using puppets.

-          Act out a story or poem as it is reread aloud.

 

 

 


UNIT 5 – PARTS OF THE LIBRARY       

 

CCCS:  3.1, 3.4, 3.5, 9.2

 

Objectives:

Upon completion of this unit, the students will demonstrate the ability to:

1.  Understand there are fiction and non-fiction books in the library.

2.  Display an understanding as to where these books are located.

3.  Begin to comprehend how fiction books are categorized.

 

Activities:

 

-          Alphabet games

-          Reading spine labels

-          “Touring” the library
