Course Description

 

 

     General music includes singing, playing instruments, dance, composing, and theater.  Students will be given the opportunity to express themselves creatively. With knowledge of notation and performance traditions they will have the ability to hear new music independently.  Skills in analysis, evaluation and synthesis enable students to recognize and pursue excellence in their musical experiences and to understand and enrich their environment.  Music is an integral part of human history.  The ability to listen with understanding is essential if students are to have a broad cultural and historical perspective.

MUSIC MISSION STATEMENT

 

 

An education in the arts is an essential part of the academic curriculum for the achievement of human, social and economic growth.  The arts enable personal, intellectual, and social development for each individual and strive to enhance the student’s sense of confidence and self-esteem.  The arts are uniquely qualified to cultivate a variety of multiple intelligences, varied and powerful ways of communicating ideas, thoughts and feelings, and increase the potential for life success as well as an enriched quality of life.  The arts are essential for students to have a broad cultural and historical perspective.

Music

 

STANDARD 1.1 (AESTHETICS)  ALL STUDENTS WILL USE AESTHETIC KNOWLEDGE IN THE CREATION OF AND IN RESPONSE TO DANCE, MUSIC, THEATER AND VISUAL ART.

 

STANDARD 1.2 (CREATION AND PERFORMANCE)  ALL STUDENTS WILL UTILIZE THOSE SKILLS, MEDIA, METHODS AND TECHNOLOGIES APPROPRIATE TO EACH ART FORM IN THE CREATION, PERFORMANCE AND PRESENTATION OF DANCE, MUSIC, THEATER AND VISUAL ART.

 

STANDARD 1.3 (ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPALS)  ALL STUDENTS WILL DEMONSTRATE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF DANCE, MUSIC, THEATER AND VISUAL ARTS.

 

STANDARD 1.4  (CRITIQUE)  ALL STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP, APPLY AND REFLECT UPON KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROCESS OF THE CRITIQUE.

 

STANDARD 1.5 (HISTORY/CULTURE)  ALL STUDENTS WILL UNDERSTAND AND ANALYZE THE ROLE, DEVELOPMENT, AND CONTINUING INFLUENCE OF THE ARTS IN RELATION TO WORLD CULTURES, HISTORY AND SOCIETY.

UNIT 1 – ELEMENTS OF MUSIC

 

Objectives:

Each student will be able to:

1.      Name and identify elements of music (pitch, melody, harmony, rhythm and dynamics).

2.      Name and identify

-         symbols for getting louder and softer

-         accent mark

-         F – forte, p – piano

-         aria

3.      Experience beat and strong beat

4.      Use basic music language

-         do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do

5.      Identify orchestra instruments

6.      Identify folk instruments

 

Duration of Time:  Ongoing for course duration (60 classes)

UNIT 2 – ACTIVE PARTICIPATION

 

Objectives:

Each student will be able to:

1.      Begin to refine perceptual, physical and technical skills through participation in music dance and music theater.

2.      Sing

-         folk, patriotic and composed songs

-         Native American songs

-         songs from other cultures

-         different tempos

-         using hand signs

-         contrast speaking and singing voice

3.      Dance

-         Body percussion

-         different tempos

-         free style/steady beat movement

-         folk and cultural dances

-         scarves, streamers, canes, balls and rope


4.      Play instruments

-         create rhythm  patterns

-         play classroom instruments expressively

-         play octave

-         experiment with new sounds

-         Orff instruments

-         Tone chimes

-         Conga and world drums

5.      Demonstrate the concepts of body and instrument position

-         show appropriate way to play Orff instruments

-         move to no beat and steady beat

6.      Develop musical concepts and skills

-         sing and play classroom instruments with skill

-         recognize and use symbols for staccato and legato

-         identify by sight and sound vocal and instrumental music

UNIT 3 – AESTHETICS/PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

 

Objectives:

Each student will be able to:

1.      Acquire knowledge and skill that increase aesthetic awareness in music, dance and theater.

UNIT 4 – CREATING/PERFORMING

 

Objectives:

Each student will be able to:

1.      Demonstrate knowledge of the written language of music and express through musical performance.

2.      Use the written language of music.

3.      Signs, symbols, notation.

4.      Demonstrate knowledge of rhythmic and melodic notation.

5.      Echo short rhythms and melodic patterns.

6.      Improvise using simple rhythmic and melodic phrases.

7.      Perform in classroom ensembles.

UNIT 5 – CRITICAL/ANALYTICAL/EVALUATIVE

 

Objectives:

Each student will be able to:

1.      Be exposed to and participate in various forms of music from different historical periods and cultures.

2.      Recognize the impact of music, dance and theater in our daily lives.

3.      Become aware of artists and artist’s works.
