Forest Avenue Primary School

The Forest Avenue Primary School is an early childhood learning community serving the needs of 270 children in grades pre-kindergarten through second. Our school philosophy embraces each child entering school and recognizes his or her unique needs, abilities, aptitudes, and interests. A creative, caring, and competent professional staff encourages every child to learn, grow, and flourish within a challenging yet supportive environment. Children develop positive self-esteem coupled with a love for learning, acquisition of knowledge, and problem solving skills.

The academic program in the primary schools is comprehensive and enriched with instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, language arts, social studies, and science being implemented by classroom teachers. Special emphasis is placed on the language arts area of writing and listening. Health, physical education, music, library skills, and art are coordinated by subject area specialists who meet regularly with each class.

The Character Education Program focuses on monthly themes in the areas of responsibility, self-worth, compassion, respect, and honesty. The Social Decision Making Program in kindergarten through grade two teaches students to be able to react positively to each other by increasing students' self-esteem, promoting appreciation of diversity, improving communication skills, and preventing escalation of disciplinary problems. Field Day allows students to participate in athletic activities in groups encompassing all grade levels. We also enjoy such whole school traditions as Healthy Breakfast Day, Read Across America, Forest Avenue Variety Show, and Red Ribbon Week.

We hope you enjoy the following poem:

What Did I Do Today
By Gwen Coy

When children come home
At the end of the day;
The question they're asked as they
Scurry to play is "Tell me,
What did you do today?'
And the answer they give makes
You sigh with dismay.
"Nothing, I did nothing today!"
Perhaps nothing means that I
Played with blocks, or counted to
10 with Mrs. Cox.
Maybe I painted a picture of red
And blue, or heard a story about
A mouse that flew.
Maybe I watched the gerbils eat
Today, or went outside on the
Swings to play.
Maybe today was the very first time
That my scissors followed a very
Straight line.
Maybe I led a song from beginning
To end, or played with a special
Brand-new friend.
When you're only 5 and your heart
Has wings, nothing can mean
So many things!
