Formatting Entries on the Works Cited Page

Below are only the most commonly used entry formats.  Refer to A Guide for MLA Documentation or our MLA Style Links for additional examples and further explanations.

 A Book by One Author


     Author Last Name, First Name.  Book Title.  Place of Publication:  Publishing Company,  Date Published.

 

A Book by Two Authors

     First Author's Last Name, First Name and Second Author's First Name Last Name.  Book Title.  City of Publication: 

                     Publishing Company,  Date Published.
 

 A Print Magazine Article (Periodical)


     Author Last Name, First Name.  "Article Title."  Magazine Title.  Date Published:  Pages.

 

 A Reference Book Article (from a Print Encyclopedia)


     Author’s Last Name, First Name (if any).  “Article Title.”  Encyclopedia Title.  Year.

 

 An Article from an Electronic Database (such as from Facts on File or an Online Encyclopedia)

     Author’s Last Name, First Name (if any).  “Article Title.”  Database Name.  Date on Database. 

              Original Print Source (if any).  Date of Visit.   <URL of  Database>.
 

 Online Magazine Articles (such as  from EBSCOhost)

     Author’s Last Name, First Name (if any).  “Article Title.”  Magazine Title.  Date of Original Print Article. 

                 Database Name.  Date of Visit.  <URL of Database>.
 

A Web Site

     Author Last Name, First Name.  Web Page Title.  Date Posted or Updated.  Sponsor.  Date Accessed or Found. 

                <URL web site address>.
 

NOTE:  If a particular source does not have an author, simply begin the entry with the next piece of information.
