Local Scholarships

The following scholarships have traditionally been available for Glen Ridge High School seniors each year.  Announcements will be made in the spring when application forms become available

Association for the Cultural Education (ACE) of Glen Ridge

·         Recognizes a Glen Ridge senior who has studied diversity of communities by taking two or more courses:  social studies, anthropology, religious studies, psychology, history, political science or international affairs; and

·        Participated in in-school or out-of-school activities promoting positive interactions and changes in the Glen Ridge community by raising sensitivity and understanding of diversity.

Mark Buttitta Memorial Scholarship                                     

The candidate for the Mark Buttitta Memorial Scholarship should be spirited, energetic and athletic with good grades (at least a 3.2 GPA).  He/she should exhibit strength of character, integrity, and honesty.  He/she should also have a lively outlook on life.

Thomas H. Bowden, Jr. Memorial Scholarship                     

In memory of Thomas Bowden, GRHS Class of ’83, bond trader at Cantor Fitzgerald, who was lost in the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001.  Essay required.

John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship                                

Specifically for Finance or Music -

For a graduating senior, must show academic promise, leadership, communication skills, school and community involvement, and financial need.

Kelly Curtis Memorial Scholarship                                         

Graduating GRHS senior who has devoted significant time and effort to helping others through community service.  Kelly Curtis (Class of 1987) served her community as a devoted member of the Glen Ridge volunteer Ambulance Squad.  Selected by H&S Committee.

April / early May

Friends of the Glen Ridge Library                                          

Scholarship awarded to a graduating high school senior who lives in Glen Ridge.  Based on academic performance and quality of essay.  Past library services is helpful but not necessary.

Gas Lamp Players HS Drama Award                                     

Must be attending a college, university, conservatory or related technical school and actively participating in the theater program; at least 3 years’ participation in high school theater or participation in community theater; minimum 2.5 GPA.

Awarded on the basis of character as determined by evaluation of essay.

Girls’ Club of Glen Ridge                                                           

Member of Girls’ Club; demonstrate have been active in community service and involved in club.

April / early May

Glen Ridge Education Association Scholarships:                 

Students must describe 3 accomplishments their education helped them to achieve; interview required.

Glen Ridge High School Theater Arts Awards                     

Candidate must be a GRHS senior with a minimum 2.0 GPA, and have participated in any capacity in a GRHS Drama Club production.  Selected by H&S Committee.

GRASE Scholarships                                                                  

Scholarship recognizes Glen Ridge High School students who have overcome academic challenges, developed an awareness of their aptitudes and talents, and worked to envision and define their future lives.

R. Tyler Hodgson Memorial Renaissance Award                 

For a student who exemplifies the qualities of the “Renaissance Person” that Tyler Hodgson possessed.

Hickson Memorial Scholarships                                               

Graduating GRHS senior who has participated in any capacity in the GRHS music program.  Consideration will be given to students continuing their study of music after high school.  Selected by H&S Committee.

Nutley Chevrolet-Buick                                                             

Essay on current automotive-related topic.

Mary Romeo Memorial Scholarship                                        

Graduating senior, planning to attend college, GPA of at least 3.0, must plan to pursue a degree in education.  Mrs. Romeo’s life was represented as the consummate educator, coach and friend to a generation of Glen Ridge High School students.

Suburban Essex Chamber of Commerce Scholarship

One (1) $500 award each to be given to a student from Belleville HS, Bloomfield HS and Glen Ridge HS.

The scholarship is to help assist the student looking to further their education in the business field.

Van Wynen Scholarship                                                            

Senior with financial need in good academic standing planning to attend college or vocational/technical school – annual up to 4 years.

Teddy Williams’ Memorial Scholarships                                

For a caring and sensitive individual with a solid sense of humor and enthusiasm for life, strong faith, positive attitude, and concern for others; short essay required.
