AP Chemistry
Summer Assignment Description
These are the major topics in Chapters 1-4 that you will work on this summer.
Unit 1: Chemical Foundations (Chapter1) scientific method; classifying matter; measurement, accuracy and precision, English and SI units, significant figures; using the factor label method to solve problems
Unit 2: Atoms, Molecules, and Ions (Chapter 2) early atomic theory; introduction to the periodic table; atomic mass, atomic number, mass number, and isotopes; naming compounds and writing chemical formulas
Unit 3: Chemical Quantities and Stoichiometry (Chapter 3) conversions among mass/moles/particles; percent composition; empirical and molecular formulas; symbols in chemical equations and balancing chemical equations; calculating quantities based on equation stoichiometry, identifying limiting and excess reactants and calculating quantities based on presence of limiting reactant, calculating percent and theoretical yield
Unit 4: Types of Chemical Reactions (Chapter 4) solutes and solvents, aqueous solutions, electrolytes and nonelectrolytes; molarity, preparing solutions of known concentration; classifying chemical reactions, identifying and writing molecular, ionic, and net ionic equations, applying solubility rules to precipitation reactions; (introduction to acid-base reactions and titration; redox reactions and the half reaction method)
Your assignment is a review of material from the first year course. Read and take notes on Chapters 1-4.8 and complete the questions listed in the table. Questions must be completed in the required format and handed in the first day of class. Your first test will be approximately two weeks after you return from summer vacation.
Enjoy your summer.

Summer Assignment Required Format
1. Write legibly. Use a pencil and an eraser or cross out with a single line. Do not overwrite.
2. Write this heading on top sheet of assignment. Number
Name Date
Chapter number and title AP Chemistry
Chapter questions assigned
Following pages require name and number only.
3. Number each page as page number / total pages in the bottom right hand corner.
For example, 1/10, 2/10,
4. Begin a new top sheet for each new chapter.
5. Skip lines between each numbered question. Do not squeeze multiple questions across a line.
6. Number each question chapter # - chapter question.
7. Write the question concept clearly showing information given. It is not necessary to rewrite the entire question.
8. Show all of your work with sufficient detail and clarity. This means writing chemical equations, writing formulaic equations and rearranging them to solve for the unknown variable, showing substitution, and showing units in your work and your answer.
9. Box your answer.
For example,
4-12a. Calc molarity of 16.45g NaCl in 1.000L soln.
![]()
![]()

Molarity = 0.2815 M
10. Odd numbered question solutions are in the back of the
text. Check your answers. If
you dont get the right answer, try again.
If you have trouble answering a question, do not just leave it blank. Do your best to try to answer the question
and leave space for corrections. Put a
question mark next to the number of the question for future reference.
