Glen Ridge Public Schools – Testing Report – October 2002
In May 1996, the New Jersey State Board of Education adopted the Core Curriculum Content Standards to describe what all students should know at the end of fourth grade and eighth grade upon completion of a New Jersey public education. Three subject areas have been updated, effective July 2002, (Language Arts Literacy, Mathematics and Science) to comply with the federal standard based reforms in No Child Left Behind. The Elementary School Proficiency Assessment (ESPA) was seen as a way to increase the effectiveness of the instruction by providing an accurate measure of how elementary students progress towards the knowledge and skills required by the fourth grade and in mastering knowledge and skills needed to pass the eighth grade test. The Grade Eight Proficiency Assessment (GEPA) is also aligned with the Core Curriculum Content Standards and is intended to indicate the progress students have made in mastering knowledge and skills they will need to pass a proficiency test in high school. Students must pass the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) to receive a diploma from a New Jersey public high school.
Three proficiency levels have been established for each of the sections of the ESPA, GEPA and HSPA. Students scoring "partially proficient" are considered to be below the minimum standard level of the proficiency set by the state. The partially proficient students on the ESPA and GEPA receive extra remediation in order to make sure they are ready for the HSPA. Students who do not perform well on the HSPA are in jeopardy of not graduating and receive special mandatory interventions.

NOTE: Glen Ridge students perform extremely well on all three state tests, passing the state standards. The state tests are only part of the district’s overall assessment program. Students Pre-K through Grade 2 use portfolios to assess educational progress. Students in Grades 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10 take the Terra Nova standardized test.
