Glen Ridge High School Construction Project on Schedule for September 2004 Opening

It may not look like much is happening, but inside the academic wing and gymnasium there is a lot going on.

·         Academic Wing - The masons have to complete the connections between the existing building and the new wing; but that has not stopped the work in the classroom wing. Office areas have been sheet-rocked, three of the four science classrooms have been installed, ceiling grids are complete, the elevator is almost operable, and cabinetry is 80% complete. In the next month the masonry will be 100%, windows will be 100%, and flooring will start to be installed.

·         Gymnasium – This space is almost complete except for the gym floor, bathroom fixtures, lockers in the changing rooms, flooring in halls and some additional finishes. The following has been completed: bathrooms and changing rooms have been tiled, backboards, scoreboard and court divider have been installed. Drop ceilings, lighting and trophy cases in our new athletic hall of fame have been installed.

The entire process has been very exciting. Please look for an early fall date for a grand opening dedication.

Glen Ridge Borough and Glen Ridge Board of Education Secure Two Grants

$300,000 for Early Childhood Education and Technology and  $93,000 to Assist with Building the New Gym

Through the hard work of Mayor Steve Plate and former Board of Education member John Lacey, the Borough and Board have been able to secure two grants to assist our school district. The first grant, the third of its kind, was for $300,000, which will be used to offset district costs in the areas of Early Childhood Education and Technology. This grant assists us in maintaining our early education program as well as keeping us on the cutting edge for educational technology. We also received a $93,000 grant to assist with the construction of the new gym. Thanks to Mayor Plate and former BOE member Lacey for all their hard work and persistence.

Fighting for Additional School Funding

The New Jersey Committee for Equity in Education Funding (NJCEEF) is a group of local elected officials and borough residents, originally brought together by former Mayor Steve Plate to explore solutions to Glen Ridge’s property tax crisis and continues under current Mayor Carl Bergmanson.  On February 26, 2004, NJCEEF will hold a “Glen Ridge for Glen Ridge” forum to kick off an intensive lobbying, e-mailing and letter writing campaign to promote specific short-term and long-term solutions to ease the burden on local property owners by securing more state money for education.  Details about this forum will be announced in the coming weeks via flyers, articles in the local papers and on Channel 36.

Please save February 26, 2004 and plan to attend this important informational meeting.

GRHS Students Continue to Score Well on Advanced Placement Tests

The College Board, in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college level Advanced Placement (AP) examinations, has named eighteen Glen Ridge High School graduates as AP Scholars. Only 15% of more than 1,000,000 students who took the AP exams in May 2003 performed at a sufficiently high level to merit recognition.

Students take the AP exams in May after completing challenging college-level courses during the school year. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on the number of year-long courses and exams taken. At Glen Ridge High School, 5 students qualified for AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average score of at least 3.5 (out of 5.0) on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Ana Aldea, Jillian Astarita, Phillip Steindel, Alison Tashima and Keara Waldron earned this recogniation.

Five students qualified for the AP Scholars with Honor Award by earning an average score of 3.25 on all AP
