Instruction/Curriculum
TITLE:
READING SPECIALIST/LITERACY COACH
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid New Jersey Educational Services Certificate and Reading Specialist Endorsement
- Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in the development of reading programs, evaluation of curricula and diagnosis of reading problems
- Ability to maintain positive learning environment
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status

Director of Student Services/Building Principals
SUPERVISES:
Pupils
JOB GOAL:
To help provide an instruction and learning environment which fosters the ability of each pupil to master reading skills appropriate to age, grade level and individual potential.
PERFORMANCE
RESPONSIBILITIES:- Provides leadership and coordination in the regular program of reading and writing instruction.
- Observes literacy instruction in classrooms on an ongoing basis, consults with teachers as requested, and acts as a link between school personnel and other literacy professionals/resources.
- Provide content knowledge and resources about learning and teaching literacy including:
- teaching strategies
- assessment techniques
- assessment of reading skills
- interpretation of assessment results, classroom routines, and practices that promote literacy, etc.
- Provide information and guidance regarding a range of effective and innovative literacy practices that make up balanced literacy through various avenues such as:
- individual discussions (informal or formal)
- coaching sessions
- demonstration lessons with pre- and post- discussion/analysis
- study groups
- staff meetings
- professional development and/or in-service training programs, and workshops
- Assist building and classroom level educators in implementing challenging and rigorous curriculum based on the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards.
- Directs a district-wide assessment program to determine student skills and knowledge in reading and writing and identifies those needing remediation or enrichment.
- Monitors pupil progress toward state standards and district objectives of literacy instruction; develops and maintains records and reports as necessary.
- Plans and administers a program to provide remedial and advanced literacy instruction.
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individual and small group instruction in order to meet the needs of each pupil.
10. Interprets pupil needs and literacy progress to classroom teachers and parents.
11. Evaluates the district's literacy program and makes recommendations for improvements as appropriate.
12. Recommends adoption and use of varied literacy instruction materials.
13. Plans and conducts in-service professional development workshops pertinent to methods and materials appropriate to various levels of literacy instruction.
14. Consults with members of building-based intervention and referral service (I&RS) teams as requested.
15. Consults with members of the child study team at individual case conferences as requested.
16. Interprets literacy test results to the administration, teaching staff and the community.
17. Participates in school-level planning, faculty meetings, committees and other school system groups.
18. Maintains professional competence and continuous improvement through in-service education and other professional growth activities.
19. Upholds and enforces school rules, administrative regulations and board policy.
20. Performs other duties within the scope of his/her employment and certification as may be assigned.
TERMS OF
EMPLOYMENT:Work year and salary to be determined by the board.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with state law and the provisions of the board's policy on evaluation and certified staff.
