The Caroline Bassillo Scholarship began in 2011 and has been supported by the Bassillo Family in the name of their daughter. Caroline lost her fight to cancer at the age of 29 in June 2010. She began her career as a Special Education teacher at Glen Ridge High School. Her students and colleagues enjoyed her passion for teaching. Her upbeat presence and warm smile are sorely missed by all who knew her.

Caroline’s second love was theater. She minored in Theater Arts in college and worked with the Glen Ridge Drama Club on several productions. Caroline also had a passion for music. She had a beautiful voice and was a member of many local bands and once sang the National Anthem at a Jackel’s Game. She incorporated this passion for the arts into her classroom, which enabled students to practice both communication and collaborative skills through hands-on lessons. Caroline fostered a positive community within her classroom and had a gift of meeting students at their level, and working with them to improve their skills in her English classes. Her students, as well as the school community, will forever remember and miss their teacher, friend, and colleague.

As an honor to Caroline's work and in her memory, this scholarship is intended to be a living tribute to her career and the work she did for students with special needs. This scholarship is awarded annually to a student who undertakes a career that is based on an altruistic desire to improve community. This scholarship program rewards one college-bound student with financial assistance to pursue higher education. Recipient will be awarded a $1000 scholarship for undergraduate study expenses, including tuition, fees, books, supplies, room, and board.

Jim lived his life lifting others up. Whether he was on the baseball field, the football field, or walking down the halls of GRHS, he made people smile. He was friends with people across all groups in school, as well as throughout his life, a life that always included a connection to his love of Glen Ridge.
